Dust & Destiny — for game masters

Don't sweat every shot; a loaded gun covering you still fires. Players: Western. Builder: Campaign Guide.

Same engine, different catalog

Dust & Destiny is not a rules fork. Rolls, combat, and damage work as on Rules overview. What changes is the genre catalog: skills, gear, advantages, Shamanic powers, NPC templates, and starter zones. In the genre picker, it is named Dust & Destiny.

A campaign's genre is set when you create it. Player characters must match. The app refuses a Fantasy wizard in a Dust party, and the other way around.

Shamanic is the only power flavour in this genre. At the table it is for Native American characters, or for people who have lived among Native nations long enough to be taught. The app does not enforce that; you do. Player wording: Western.

At the table: guns are cheap, movement is not

Combat is still initiative, Speed Bank, Hit, Dodge, Recovery — see Combat. A Peacemaker already costs the minimum 1 Stamina per shot. Do not sweat that point on every trigger pull. Defenders Dodge incoming shots; Parry is for blades and close work — you do not block a bullet with a saber or a hide shield.

Spend Stamina (or call a Constitution roll) when someone runs the open, climbs the lookout trail, or rides hard. Recovery is for that kind of work, not for lining up a third cartridge. Healing between fights is still GM-adjudicated: Damage, armour & recovery.

Narrative moves stay on you. Combat Moves already says so: same dice, no extra button.

The drop is yours to call

Fantasy is mostly blow-by-blow. A Western gunfight is lethal and fast. If someone already shot at a hero behind cover and missed, they still have the bead. When that hero leaves cover on their turn to close with a tomahawk, the other person tries to fire again if the gun is not empty. Call a Hit now (range band, maybe haste). Then the tomahawk if they miss or the cylinder clicks empty.

Catalog shots and reload speed are what “empty” means — a Peacemaker is six and a slow gate-load. The app does not spend rounds for you. You can use an extra action from the Speed Bank if it is sitting there; the reason is the fiction (“he still has you in the sights”), not the bank lighting up.

The other way around is also true: fumbling a reload is when the tomahawk does get there.

Create the campaign

  1. Open Campaigns. Tap Create new campaign.
  2. Choose Dust & Destiny in the genre picker.
  3. Name it. Leave Include default NPCs on. Save.

The checkbox only appears on a brand-new unsaved draft. The starter cast is ranch, trail, law, outlaw, military, railroad, town folk, plains life, and animals — more than you need. Easier to delete extras than to invent a cast from scratch. Uncheck only when you deliberately want an empty catalog.

Details: NPCs — Include default NPCs. List and editor: Campaigns. Builder workflow: Campaign Guide.

Bundled maps

On Edit campaign, expand Zones and tap Import bundled zones. The list follows this campaign's genre. A Dust campaign does not offer the fantasy Inn.

  • Last Chance Gulch — a rail-end town: platform, saloon, hotel, bank, sheriff, adobe streets.
Last Chance Gulch from the ridge
  • Fort Ironwood — palisade, gate, towers, trading post, and a small camp on the creek.

  • The Devil's End Canyon — a dead-end outlaw hideout: wash, lookout, cave, and a climb horses cannot take.

Nothing is auto-seeded. Check the maps you want, then import. Customize links and descriptions the same way you would the Inn. Graph editor: Zones & locations.

The imported graphs are empty of encounters. Drop your own templates on rooms, or use Custom encounter in Play.

Finding the campaign later

Each row on the Campaigns list shows a genre chip. When both genres are installed, a Genre filter sits above the table. Player Campaigns has the same control. Filtering the list does not change create, play, or delete.

Honest gaps

  • Vehicles.json is empty. Horses stay HasMount / Charge. Do not wait on wagons or locomotives to run a session.
  • No armour catalog. Kit is clothes and gear.

New to the builder? Quick start still applies — pick Dust & Destiny in the genre dialog, then follow the same save and NPC steps.
