💂 Tabletop Games
Humans have been gaming and scheming since the dawn of civilization — even the ancient Babylonians rolled their dice and dreamed of victory. Through the Middle Ages, chess ruled as the ultimate test of strategy, though it lacked one crucial ingredient: the beautiful chaos of chance. Real life — and real battle — is unpredictable. And that spark of randomness? That’s what would eventually bring games to life.
The first to capture this spirit was the German “Kriegsspiel” (War Game), crafted by Georg von Reisswitz in the late 1700s. From there, history marched on — straight to H.G. Wells and his legendary “Little Wars”. Picture this: tin soldiers marching across tabletops, measured in inches, firing dice-powered volleys while cardboard hills and toy houses formed their battlegrounds. That’s where tabletop warfare truly began.
These games still thrive today in mighty forms like Warhammer™ — where the dedicated gather their armies, paint them with pride, and wage glorious plastic wars. If that’s your calling, friend, grab your brush and we’ll see you later — once you’re ready for a more… intimate adventure.
Somewhere along the way, players traded their armies for heroes. In 1974, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson took the battlefield rules of Chainmail and fused them with storytelling, birthing a legend: Dungeons & Dragons™. For the first time, you didn’t command a legion — you became a single adventurer, guided by the mysterious and sometimes devious Game Master.
As D&D grew into AD&D, so did its rules — and its list of professions. Fighters, Mages, Thieves, Clerics… soon joined by Paladins, Rangers, Illusionists, Bards, and so many more that even the gods of dice had trouble keeping count. Every situation had a table. Every table had a rule. (Yes, even for a drunken archery contest. Probably.) But the heart of it all? Great fun
Other systems followed — GURPS™, Champions™, and many others — breaking free from rigid character “classes” and letting players build whoever they wanted to be. RPG Meister proudly follows that tradition: freedom first, rules second.
Yet many games still cling to the grid — tactical maps, measured movement, and the eternal question: “If my fighter moves to square X, can your thief reach square Y before the ogre gets there?” If plotting and tactical synergy are your jam, we salute you — and recommend the Champions Arena for your PvP fix.
But RPG Meister goes one step further: no grids, no maps, no clutter. (Let’s be honest — your phone screen wouldn’t hold one anyway 📱.) Instead, your Game Master paints the world with words. You describe what your hero does — or what they dare not do — and together, the story unfolds. Maybe in the light of a torch… or in the dark, where only your imagination can see what lurks ahead 👀.
